Reminiscing

As my little ones are all tucked in bed, and it is finally quiet in the house, I can't help but sit and think back to this very night exactly one year ago, and think about the events of that night, as well as the days following. It was a night of excitement, fear, anticipation, extreme PAIN, and love, among many other feelings.

I've decided to write Kycen's birth story...nothing too gruesome, just maybe a little more than a younger audience would want to read. Afterall, birth is not a pretty sight...

It was just another day (a Tuesday to be exact) in the life of pregnant me. I had a doctors appointment in the early afternoon, where I was inflicted with what I thought to be excruciating pain-my doctor swept my membranes. She said my cervix was really soft and I was dilated to a 2! She seemed to think that maybe the sweeping might put me into labor within the next couple of days. I came back to work and would have these pains in my belly, where my belly would totally distort and get all hard. I thought it was just my baby moving/stretching weird because I could usually push where his butt (or knee/elbow) was pushing out and the pain would stop. Little did I realize that I was having what some in the baby world referred to as CONTRACTIONS! I never had contractions the first time around, so I had nooo idea what they were or what they really felt like.

I had errands and stuff to do after I picked up Preslie from daycare, and I was meeting Desmond for dinner. I was 2 weeks from my due date and wasn't thinking I'd be having a baby before the weekend. WRONG! I met Desmond at the laundromat and by now had figured out that I was having contractions. He asked how far apart they were, and was mad that I hadn't been timing them! So I started watching the clock while he took Preslie across the street for a drink and to go potty. They weren't very regular; it would go 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 5 minutes, 15 minutes. I had always heard to not head to the hospital until they were 5 minutes apart and regular. Mine weren't, so I thought I was good.

Wrong again! We got to TGIFridays for dinner, ordered our food, and the contractions picked up. I was in so much pain! They were coming regularly; every (at most) 5 minutes. And they lasted the longest 1-2 minutes of my life. By this point I had tried to eat maybe 2 bites and Desmond suggested we go to the hospital. I said no and that I'd drive to my moms so that I could drop Preslie off and get my mom. He said absolutely not, as I could hardly drive at that point. The reason I didn't want him to take me was because I knew he didn't want to be there and he didn't want to meet my family for the first time under those circumstances. Needless to say, I lost the argument, and he drove me to the hospital. On the way, I called my mom to leave work to head up to the hospital, called Kim since she was my support throughout my entire pregnancy and was going to be in the room, and my dad to bring my bag and come get Preslie.

I could barely walk into the hospital. Preslie was probably scared to death thinking I was dying or something! I checked in at the maternity ward, and they told me to have a seat and WAIT! The nerve! Did they not see how much pain I was in? My doctor passed by us on her way out to grab some dinner and told me she'd see me tomorrow. Ha! After what seemed like an eternity, a nurse came and got me (taking me away from the maternity wing to the regular rooms) as Desmond was sitting with Preslie and my mom was coming up the elevator. The nurse asked me to change into a gown and pee in a cup. The 2nd never happened as when I sat down I thought my baby was going to fall out if I tried to push some pee out, and I was in the throes of a major contraction. She said they wanted to check me because they didn't want to put me in a birthing room until I was over 6 cm dilated. The nurse said she was pretty certain I was at least that, but had to follow orders. Another nurse came in, checked me, yelled that I was an 8.5 and to call my doctor back and get me to a birthing room. I briefly remember having my family walk to the door as I was trying to walk out, and hugging Preslie. I ended up asking for a wheelchair because I couldn't walk far without having a 'stopinmytracks' contraction.

I got to the room, and it was like a race against the clock to hurry and get things done. It took 4 attempts to get an IV in my hand, because they kept collapsing my veins. 5th attempt went in my wrist. I had tested Group B Strep positive, so they were trying to get the meds up and in me prior to delivery so I didn't pass it to my baby during delivery. They had several nurses running around getting the room set up for the delivery. And then came the big question, "can I have an epidural?" Well the answer to that was no I couldn't have the traditional epidural because I would've divered by the time it took effect. So I got a Spinal Block, which would last exactly ONE HOUR before it wore off and I'd start feeling everything.

The clock was ticking. My doctor broke my water. I was a 10. I felt ready to push. Leg stirrup things came out, and I started pushing. Karen was massaging and stretching "down there" so that I didn't tear. I pushed and pushed. All the while I could hear my phone buzzing (it was on vibrate). 5 rounds of pushes, and just like that, my sweet little boy was born! From the time I checked into the hospital to the time I delivered was less than 2 hours! I couldn't believe it went by so quickly. One minute I could feel him kicking me, and the next he was born and I was holding him.

Before

After

Look whoooo's ONE!

Today is my little man's FIRST birthday! It was such an exciting day...I think he was terribly worn out by the time bedtime came around. He barely lasted until 7pm tonight.

He had a little birthday party at daycare today, with all of my cute decorations that I worked so hard on. I got lots of comments on how cute it was *big smile*.

We went to dinner with my family to Chili's where Kycen ate pretty much everything that was offered (or just passed by his little eyes).

We came home and did cake with just me, Kycen, and Preslie...our little family :) And of course presents! Preslie picked out a really cool racecar thing and he got a bunch of balls from me (his 2 favorite things these days...balls and cars).

Happy Birthday my sweet angel!

Visitors

I was so lucky to be able to have my bestest friend Ember and her family come to visit us for the day! She was in town for her sisters wedding, and I haven't seen her for a good couple years (I haven't seen her kids since Preslie was one, and her husband since they lived in Washington!) Preslie and her daughter Tempestt were instant best friends, and little Kycen had to be right in the middle of all the commotion! Slate kinda kept to himself playing his ps3, not that I blame him since he is the oldest! Preslie even had a sleepover with them (they stayed at my parents house in the guest bedroom), which surprised me a little, but I was happy that she made a new friend. Ember said that they reminded her of us when we were little (we've been friends since kindergarten...). We always wanted our kids to be friends! Now Preslie can't wait for Julie's wedding at the end of July so that we can go stay at their house. I'm so glad they could come for a visit, even though it was so quick!

Little did I realize that I only took 2 pics when they were here...grrr! Hopefully I can get some of the ones Ember took!

Twas the night before a birthday...

It's the night before my baby turns 1, and I'm just finishing up with his party preparations. Silly me thought I could be some sort of super woman and be all cutesy and crafty, and make all his decorations and stuff for the party...what was I thinking!?!? Well, it's safe to say that it only took me 10ish hours to cut everything out and put it together-no that's not long at all! All in all though, after all is said and done, everything turned out darling (and very cutesy and crafty to boot!) next time I do this (Preslie's birthday is in June), I will be able to plan oh so much better! I seemed to be ill prepared for the anniversary of my little ones birth...*sigh*

I'll get pics posted of "all things birthday" shortly...hats, favor tags/bags, cupcake wrappers and toppers, water bottles, and signs. I sure was ambitious, and I didn't even do everything I had wanted! Thank you Tatum for all your help! I'd still be at it if it wasn't for you!

Busy Busy

I'm sitting in a training class at this point, bored out of my mind nonetheless, thinking about all the things I have to do after work today. It was a busy (but good) weekend, but I didn't get hardly anything done! I didn't get much sleep either...
Here's the list of things I can think of at this time:
-pick up cupcakes for Desmond
-order cupcakes for Kycen's birthday party
-print all of the party decorations and put them all together
-get some birthday favors, cello bags, lollipop sticks
-wrap presents
-help with Preslie's homework (for last week since I'm such a slacker)
-clean up my house for upcoming arrival of Ember and family
-make the bed at my moms for said family above
-get to bed at a decent hour so I can be one time to work tomorrow

It's going to be a LONG night! Can't wait to see Ember and the kids tonight (and even Matt too I suppose), and spend the day together tomorrow too! What things are we going to do tomorrow? I must take them to Cafe Rio...my favorite place to eat!!! Mmmmm.

Totally UNprepared!

So, I'm realizing that Kycen's 1st birthday (YEAH!) is coming up next week. Have I even began to plan a little party for him? Ordered cupcakes for daycare? Anything?!?! *sigh* I bought a cute package to make his decorations, and just got the information emailed over to the person today. As in, 5 minutes ago. I'm sure by the time I get that back, it will be tuesday, and I will be up all night long putting together his party stuff. I'm such a PROCRASTINATOR!! Maybe I'll get my best work done under pressure? Maybe...

SO I had my friend Tatum come over today to take some pictures of my cute little boy, and he wouldn't smile...AT ALL! Of the 40 pictures she took, there wasn't one smile, not even an inkling of a smile...little bugger! She thinks he hates her. I had to tell her that he must not like me either because he doesn't smile for my camera either. Oh well. We'll try again next saturday-hopefully the weather will be nicer outside and we can go to a park or something. Then at least he'll be officially 1 years old. My how the time has flown!

Here's a few photos from the photo shoot.

My new LOVE

So today I have a new love obsession with these potatoes I found at the store. Single serving of deliciousness that my children absolutely LOVE. Kycen will eat an entire bowl himself...little piglet of mine :)

It's nice to find something kid approved and super easy. Made my life just that much simpler...

Sunday Thoughts

At this moment, I'm listening to Kycen giggle as I poke him in the belly. He's really amused by my antics right now...could be it's past his bedtime and he's tired, OR, he's enjoying his one-on-one time with mommy tonight. I'm going to go with option #2, which brings a big smile to my face! Preslie stayed the night with my parents tonight since she doesn't have school tomorrow.

I've been following the blog of a family I went to high school with for the last several days. My heart is aching for them and their little boy who had a tumor on his brain removed on Friday. I cannot imagine what they are going through at this time, and I am praying for their cute little boy and family.

It has really made me think about alot of things this weekend. It's made me hug my kids a little tighter. Go to Mcdonald's for the 2nd week in a row for breakfast by request of my cute daughter. Watch Megamind about 10 times since Friday. Start planning an outrageous/crazy party for my daughter for her 6th birthday.

So today I'm going to vow to not sweat the small stuff and to consider each new day I have with the ones I love, a gift.
